Want a Kindle Fire in South Africa?

The Kindle Touch and Kindle fire is not currently available for delivery to South Africa. There is a good possibility we won't see it in South Africa until 2012. We have however notice a few reasonably priced Kindle Fires and Kindle Touch readers on BidorBuy.co.za. Kindle Fire Tablets start at around R1800. Please click on the image below to start your search.

Will the Kindle Fire work in South Africa: My thoughts

We’ve been receiving a few questions about the usability of the new Kindle Fire in South Africa. We all agree it looks to be an awesome piece of kit. I noticed a few importers taking orders for the Kindle Fire in South Africa, however the questions remains. Can you use the Kindle Fire in South Africa?

My thoughts are that it will work, however not all services from Amazon will be available. Amazon has a Appstore for cloud based media services in the US. This means that only people living in America can stream live video content and mp3’s through their device. With Amazon making a slight loss on every device they sell it is surely intended for Amazon’s streaming services as they’ll recoup their money through video and music downloads. I have heard a rumor that the “US only” media services are even restricted when American Amazon customers travel abroad.

This does not mean that the Kindle Fire will be useless to Amazon customers in South Africa but it does seem that you’d need to own the content first, then you would need to upload it to your Kindle Fire before you can enjoy it. With only 5GB storage and without a way to add apps, it seems to be a Kindle in color and would only be worth it if and when Amazon opens their streaming media services to the rest of the world.

I’ve really been looking forward to getting my hands on the new Kindle fire. At this point in time there is no international release date for Kindle Fire. I think I will stick with my Kindle Keyboard until Amazon makes their cloud services, appstore and streaming media available to South Africa. Watch this space.

25 October 2011 New Software for Kindle Keyboard:

News just in from Amazon is that they released a free software update for the Kindle 3 Keyboard. The Kindle update is only available over Wi-Fi and will deliver cracking new enhancements to your Kindle reading device. The new features will include:

** You can now download your archived personal docs on your Kindle Keyboard which means you can view then anywhere at any time. You can access your documents in your Kindle library and it will remain there until you remove them from the “Manage Your Kindle” page.

** Whispersync for Personal Documents on Kindle Keyboard: Just as with Kindle books, Whispersync automatically synchronizes your last page read, bookmarks and annotations for personal documents (with the exception of PDFs) across the Kindle devices. Learn more about Kindle Personal Document Service on www.amazon.com/kindle personal documents.

How to update your Kindle:  Turn your wifi on and connect to your local network. From the Home screen, press Menu and select "Sync and Check for Items." The new update will now be downloaded to your Kindle in the background and will automatically install next time your Kindle goes to sleep mode.

03 October 2011     Amazon launches new Kindle Touchand Kindle Fire Range

There were a few rumors and now it’s a reality. For the past year I have been receiving emails from Kindle South Africa supporters asking when there will be a color version of the Kindle available to the South African market. We are nearly there! On Wednesday the 28th of September, Amazon introduced a brand new Kindle to the world. A Kindle Tablet which could rival the Apple iPad. The newest version of the Kindle will be called the Kindle Fire and it is set to make its appearance in the US on 07 November 2011. This nifty machine will run the ever-improving Android operating system.

Talk of the town is that Amazon will subsidize the Kindle Fire to ensure it is a real competitor to the tablet market which is steadily getting more crowded. Yes, that is right; it will be less than half the price of an Apple iPad at only $199.00.  The bad news my dear Kindle lovers is that at present there is no release date for the Kindle Fire for South Africa. The release date is for US customers only. I have a sneak suspicion that they are busy boosting their Kindle arsenal in order to sustain a Xmas buying frenzy. The current Kindle keyboard sold out last year and I can assure you the newest version will too. With all the hoo-ha about the latest Kindle Fire, no one bat an eyelid when Amazon also introduced 3 new versions of the Kindle. The first is now called Kindle…yes I know, Kindle. It is the only “new” Kindle currently available in South Africa. This version also sports a 6” screen but with a toggle instead of a keyboard. This of course makes the Kindle even lighter than the current Kindle which have aptly been renamed to the Kindle Keyboard WiFi and Kindle Keyboard WiFi+3G.  The other 2 versions are called the Kindle Touch. (Kindle Touch Wi-Fi & Kindle Touch WiFi+3G)  This also sports a 6” screen but with, yes you guessed it, a touch screen. I’ll post a review as soon as I can get hold of one. In the meantime please check out the
latest versions here:

26 May 2011 The Electronic You - in South Africa!

Amazon built their multi billion dollar business with the idea to be the biggest book store in the world. Even if they employed wizard, Gandalf the Grey, they could not have predicted that sales of eBooks would surpass that of hard copies, 5 years ago.

After less than 4 years of selling eBooks, Amazon announced that they are now in fact selling more electronic books than printed books.

The ratio is close, but the fact remains that Amazon is selling 110 Kindle books for every printed book. This does not include any free eBooks which is an astonishing feet! They expect to sell 3 times as many eBooks to printed books by July this year.

I have been asked on numerous occasions by reputable businessmen in South Africa, “how can we get Kindle into the South African schools?" It is astonishing that it could be so much easier to own and distribute books all over Africa by simply releasing an electronic version or a Kindle school book. Every country, including South Africa has environmental targets to reach. Educating the masses in South Africa is one of the biggest problems and the biggest opportunity at the same time. My question is, when would publishers in South Africa step up to the plate to make their books available on the Kindle or any other ereader. The possibilities are endless and this could change the lives of millions of people in South Africa and Africa as a whole.

The technology is there. It is cheap and even to buy a Kindle in South Africa, would cost you less than to buy 1 year’s worth of books in a South African Universality. All I’m saying is that publishers should stop being selfish and make books/knowledge available in an electronic format to South Africans. Why can’t we lead the way to make learning in South Africa easy and affordable. It is possible and the publishing industry would ultimately benefit. Fact! Time to start a revolution (I'm sure Amazon would be happy)

21 April 2011 South Africa wants an improved Kindle (Well i do)

Once you decide to buy yourself a Kindle in South Africa, you would normally also get a Kindle case for it. Just to ensure your Kindle lasts a long time and doesn't’t get damaged. Then you’ll probably have the same decisions as I had to make. Which color Kindle cover, do I buy a Kindle case with a light or do I buy a separate clip on book reading light? The lighted Kindle cover from Amazon has it’s pros and cons. Cons: It draws battery from the Kindle v Cons: It is a lot lighter than a clip-on light with a couple of AA batteries within.

Once you receive your Kindle, it is time to configure it. Setting up your Kindle to store and display your favorite South African kindle books and magazines is not easy, however I’m sure Amazon is working on that for their next generation Kindle. But what else can they add? Well I’m writing this on my overclocked PC and thinking, would it not be nice to do it on my Kindle. It is so mobile and when I go traveling I really don’t want to be carrying my 2.5kg laptop with charger with me. Would it not be nice to have a little plug-in or infrared keyboard for typing? Perhaps the folding keyboard could be part of the case. This would make my life so much easier as the Kindle is compact, light with amazing battery power.

I have heard that Amazon has opened up the OS for developers to add apps and make it more like an iPad. I have never been a fan of the Apple fad, however it holds a lot more promise than the Kindle at present. I think there is massive potential for Amazon to make the Kindle a true competitor for the iPad. I love my Kindle! If you bought a Kindle in South Africa, I am sure you love yours as much as I do. Let’s keep our fingers crossed the next Kindle is as affordable, it has great apps, great covers with loads of Kindle accessories.

18 January 2011 Another Millionaire club milestone for Amazon Kindle Author

Amazon announced on the 12th of January that Nora Roberts joins Stieg Larson, Author of Millennium trilogy and James Patterson in the Millionaires club. It is regarded as one of the highest achievements selling more than a million books in electronic Kindle format.

Nora Roberts, who uses who pens under the name of J.D. Robb sold over 1.17Million books as of the 11th of January. J.D. Robb has been a bestselling author for over 15 years with over 200 novels such as the series, “In Death” and other best sellers such as “Northern Lights”, “The Search” and “The Garden Trilogy”. Nora has won numerous awards and nominated by Times Magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential People in 2007 and sometimes called, America’s favorite novelist.

Amazon has done exceptionally well for authors by launching the Kindle 3. We get numerous emails a day from people in South Africa asking, “where can I buy a Kindle in South Africa”. This has given authors a truly global presence with customers of Amazon’s Kindle able to read their books on a PC, Tablet Computer and other devices such as phones. Kindle South Africa really hopes that one day we will see a South African author shine and join these authors in the millionaires club.

12 January 2011 New Study: Amazon's Kindle tops Twitter tweets

Graph of 'relevant' Twitter conservations about consumer satisfaction.

(Credit: Crimson Hexagon)

It is a well known fact that neither Amazon on B&N disclosed their respective numbers for the number of eBook readers sold.
Crimson Hexagon took it upon them to investigate and draw their own conclusions about the Amazon Kindle’s popularity, compared to other eReaders such as the Nook and iPad.

Kindle South Africa suggests that you don’t take the study on face value seeing as there are a few factors in the study which doesn't’t add up to us. The reason Kindle South Africa says this is that Crimson Hexagon's blog post title is, "Nook emerges as serious contender in the e-book reader universe," followed by the heading, "Online opinion indicates new color Nook blooms late but bright for Barnes & Noble."

Their blog also says that, "While the Nook readers have certainly established a solid and growing position in the e-reader market during 2010, our analysis also revealed that Amazon's Kindle is still by far the most popular e-reader on the basis of total conversation volume on Twitter."

Buy comparing the amount of tweets from Twitter users containing keywords regarding the relevant eBook readers, Crimson Hexagon found that the Kindle far is the most popular device when it comes to tweets. There are on average around 1,000 tweets per day about the Amazon Kindle and only around 500 per day for Barnes & Noble’s, Nook.

The amount of tweets, with regards to Apple’s iPad as an e-reader, did not come close at around 120 per day. We feel the key to this study is relevance as it seems to involve “customer satisfaction”, a tricky thing to analyse on twitter. Anyway, here are a few highlights from the study carried out:

Each device got positive feedback except for the iPad as an eBook reading device. (The Kindle and Nook both received around 80% positive conversation).

The iPad’s downfall was its reflective, non-gloss LCD screen and size, in comparison to the other ereaders.

The Kindle’s affordability played a big part in tweets whilst both saw a drop in price in summer.

Both the standard Nook (e-ink) and Nook color came out on top in terms of percentage of total positive feedback.

Although Kindle South Africa feels that Crimson Hexagon’s study is useful, none of this came as a big surprise to us. We do feel there is room to take all ereading devices into consideration and so that importers in South Africa can take note. Kindle is currently driving the South Africa eReader market with little our no competition. The good news is that after we sent an email to Barnes & Noble about distribution of the Nook eReader in South Africa, they displayed a genuine interest in the South African Market. Kindle South Africa with keep you up to date with our discussions and in the meantime we will continue to supply you with all the information you need to “buy a kindle in South Africa” along with Kindle Accessories.
